What is your Career Purpose?

Life Purpose. Sometimes we think of our personal and professional lives as two very distinct worlds, when in fact they blend together in a way that fulfill us, builds our character and makes us who we are. Of course, they should also support our purpose.  You may feel that your personal purpose is to raise a happy family, help your community, follow a higher power, or to be happy and healthy. These are all tall, yet noble, orders. So what’s left for your career?

Career Purpose. Understanding your career purpose can help you clarify (and build upon) your life’s purpose. They don’t need to be distinct. When you explore them deeply, they may be one in the same.  Did you know that your career purpose may also help you realize your personal aspirations? Instead of looking at career and life as two worlds, search for the common threads.

Career Engagement. When you have a career purpose, you are more engaged at work. You also can make a positive difference in your life and the lives of others. This doesn’t mean that you have to run a non-profit or work at a shelter in order to have purpose in your work. While these are certainly noble endeavors you, too are making positive impacts on the world around you. When you understand and cultivate this purpose you will feel more fulfilled at the end of the day.

Career Advancement. And guess what? When you work toward your career purpose, you will reach your goals quickly and successfully. Realizing how your leadership brings results to your organization while empowering your team, can help you clearly articulate your value to any organization. This is key when interviewing, networking and negotiating for advancement.

But remember, it’s not about the money. It’s about understanding what makes you special and how you can feel fulfilled by contributing that to the good of those around you. This is an indescribable feeling.
