The KBM Coaching & Consulting 411 with Kim Monaghan
Why Should I Hire a Coach? Change is never easy. Clarity, motivation and accountability are often needed in order to move forward towards cultivating career happiness and success. Whether that change includes creating a new career, becoming a stronger leader, empowering your team, or finding work life balance, a coach can help you develop strategies for goal attainment.
Are Credentials Important? A coach doesn’t have to be a celebrity to be a great coach, but they should have experience and credentials. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) certification demonstrates that a coach is trained and has honed their skills with a dedication to succeed in this “helping” profession. Having credentials also requires continual improvement and learning. I am a Professional Certified Coach with the ICF. This is the second highest credential awarded to coaches and currently I have enough coaching hours (over 3000) to sit for my Master Level Coach certification exam.
Each year I strive for over 20 hours in training, including ethics and results-focused resourcing in order to bring my best to each coaching session and help my clients realize their full potential. I am also a Certified Personal Branding Specialist and Certified Professional Resume Writer. My additional credentials and education are listed on my website at KBMCoaching.com.
What Happens in Coaching? A coaching relationship is a mutually designed alliance that helps you define, evaluate and strategize ways to achieve awareness and objectives. Your coach will listen and support, provide a platform for intuitive dialogue, encourage awareness and challenge you toward objective accountability. The agenda is yours, the goals are yours, and the work in each coaching session is built upon what YOU want to achieve. Together we unearth your resourcefulness and creativity by identifying and connecting with your strengths and coupling that with your inner wisdom to fuel your success.
Coaching begins with your identifying what is most important to you. We’ll discuss the areas that you’d like to work on and what you’d like to achieve and then lay out a plan to help you take positive steps forward. I will be your guide and partner on this journey but the overall coaching agenda, the action that you take and the homework that you choose to work on between sessions is up to you.
What’s the Difference Between Coaching & Consulting? Coaching is traditionally question and answer with the client ultimately determining their best course of action based on their inner wisdom, which is drawn out of them in the coaching process. It is my role as your coach to help you gain clarity and awareness, then support you in establishing forward action that you will take between coaching sessions. While coaching and consulting can intertwine, there are distinctions.
Consulting is the process of providing knowledge and expertise to a client. In the career coaching industry (much like that of executive and business coaching), coaching is typically a combination of coaching and consulting. In each coaching session you will experience a hybrid that not only allows you to draw out your best self and grow in self- awareness and personal discipline but also be provided with informative consultation on the subject matter. This is especially evident in the “Career Transition Coaching” package, which requires consultation and accountability in order for you to achieve measurable results.
Why is Coaching Conducted Virtually? Ask any coach and they will tell you the benefits of virtual coaching and I certainly agree. This begins with Convenience: Just like you, most of my clients are executives or professionals with busy, demanding schedules. Virtual coaching allows you to focus on achieving your goals at the time that’s best for you. Whether we meet before work, during the day, while you’re traveling, or in the evening or on a weekend, all coaching is conducted in the privacy of your workspace or the comfort of your own home.
Think of it this way. Virtual coaching provides a confidential, relaxed and focused environment. Virtual coaching also increases your Results: While in-person coaching is certainly an option, there is less distraction when coaching virtually. It’s proven that when coaching virtually, both the client and coach are more focused on the client’s agenda, attaining results and making the most of each session without peripheral concerns or interruptions. Virtual coaching is also Cost Effective: Coaching virtually drastically reduces the cost for client as there are no parking fees, or coaching rate hikes due to loss time before and after sessions, travel, overhead and conference room rental fees. However, in-person coaching sessions are available for an additional charge.
What Do You Mean By “Career Happiness”? I believe that Career Happiness exists when you’re engaged and challenged with plenty of opportunities for growth and contribution. Career Happiness should also include productive collaborations, be sustainable, and aligned with your ultimate career objectives. Additionally, it is one that supports you personally through work-life balance. We spend eight or more waking hours of our day at work. Why not spend that time being Career Happy? This is not a fiction. Rather, Career Happiness is a real, attainable state where all of these parameters exist, and you feel energized and engaged in your pursuits. You deserve to be Career Happy so it’s time to learn how to leverage your career capital and personal brand to attain the career of your dreams.
What About Resume Writing? If you’re challenged to produce compelling career marketing documents, I’m here to help. As a Certified Professional Résumé Writer, I have over 15 years of experience crafting hundreds of personally branded career portfolios, but my approach differs from a template-based résumé mill that will probably charge you $500 or more. I want to know what makes you unique and help you translate your dynamic attributes on paper, online and in person so you’ll starting attract opportunities. And the right opportunities. I have found over the years that the best work comes when the client is involved in the process as it lays the groundwork for personal branding, interviewing, negotiating and targeted networking. We will work together on this which is more results-effective and far less costly than hiring someone to write a resume alone because of all the other deliverables, support, motivation, direction and coaching that you receive throughout this process.
What About Goals? Career coaching is highly goal driven. You will see that in order to achieve marked progress you will need to set goals for yourself and I, as your coach, will help you explore ways to achieve them along with holding you accountable. Remember, we will always be flexible around your needs, especially if your long-term objectives change. Still, be prepared to make lists, set goals and develop plans of action. Come to coaching prepared with note taking materials. Additionally, I have a library of resources that I’ve designed to support you on your journey and in meeting your goals and will share those with you as they relate to your specific needs and objectives.
Is Coaching Confidential? The coaching relationship is confidential to the extent allowable by the law. As you’re probably aware, it is impossible to protect the confidentiality of information, which is transmitted electronically. This is particularly true of e-mail and information stored on computers connected to the Internet, phone and even in-person conversations in conference rooms or public spaces. At times, the client may choose to participate in group sessions, teleconferences, trainings and sharing testimonials. I ask you to agree to maintain the confidentiality of all information communicated to you by other participants as well as to and from your coach. I strive to do my best to ensure all clients’ communication remains confidential but cannot guarantee issues beyond my control. If these are of concern to you, I encourage you to research encryption and other forms of security protection.
What Are Your Fees? With each coaching session you will receive more attention and resources than can be illustrated in a short verse. Your career happiness is my mission, and it is always challenging to reflect the professional commitment in fees, as it is secondary to helping you excel in your life and profession. Still, as a consumer, I appreciate the importance of having the details in advance of making any financial commitment. As a coach and consultant, I appreciate the dual investment in this dynamic development and goal attainment process; therefore, my fees are clearly outlined at KBMCoaching.com on the “Coaching” page.
Employee development, corporate training, consulting and internal coaching packages and programs are unique to an organization’s needs and will be negotiated under corporate sponsorship agreement. Requests for Proposals can be made via my contact form.
Why Do You Have A Leaf In Your Logo? Growth, growth, growth! To me, nothing symbolizes growth more than the elements of nature. Trees offer an ideal metaphor for career development in how their sturdy trunks provide a solid foundation of authentic strengths; their ever-growing limbs a symbol of outreach and experimental exploration, and their perpetually growing leaves that do fall, but for one reason—the pursuit of transformation.
