Year of a Mindful Career: Obstacle or Opportunity?

From time to time we all have concerns about career obstacles or objections. When these situations become mental roadblocks, there is nowhere to go but down.

When I work with a client, we unearth all the opportunities that arise from an obstacle/objection, but unless they are motivated to change their perspective, nothing will change.

You may have heard me say before, “It’s a slippery slope to Bitterdom.” This is a kingdom that I don’t want to live in and neither should you.

We’re better than this.

I feel hurt, disappointed and dismayed by criticism, setbacks and objections. Don’t we all? But I’m trying very hard to ask myself, what did this opportunity teach me? How can I grow from here? I also work hard to remind myself that life isn’t perfect and these things happen for a reason—to teach us and push us toward growth.

This morning, I spent a few moments outlining what opportunities came from some obstacles that I faced in the past year. I also wrote out how I plan to move forward.

It’s not always easy, but somewhere inside of each obstacle is an opportunity just waiting for us to explore.

Let’s focus on that. It’s a choice. If you’re not ready, I understand. But keep this in mind: It’s the only way to move forward.

Personal Challenge: What opportunities exist in an obstacle that you are currently facing? Outline these opportunities in your journal along with what you need to do to move forward.
